Disability Confident Event
On Thursday 10th Oct 24, Legacy In The Community co-hosted an event with the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) at The College Merthyr Tydfil to promote the importance of being Disability Confident. This was an extremely well attended event with approx 100 x attendees present. We heard from a host of speakers who each positively reflected on how inclusive recruitment can benefit and uplift businesses.
We extend our thanks to Andrew Mosely, Sara Davies, Claire Hughes, Gavin Llewellyn, Elite Supported Employment Agency, Lisa James-Gillum, Disabled People’s Employment Champion Gabi Preece, Aled Wilson, Sarah Marshall and Ken Lawton from the Disability Services Advocates Team for speaking on important matters that involve the retention and support that people with disabilities and health conditions can have whilst in work and looking for work.
We would like to offer a special mention to Ceri Jennings from Sparkles Cleaning Services Wales & West Ltd, who has created and effectively established a business model that actively seeks to recruit people with disabilities and health conditions, an example we hope many other businesses will follow.
Did you know that 83% of people acquire their disabilities or health conditions whilst at work? Many people have never experienced having a disability before, so when it happens, it may be difficult to adjust to a health condition at work. The Disability Confident scheme exists to assist employers in being an inviting and inclusive organisation to disabled employees and candidates.
People with disabilities are a valuable talent pool that can assist businesses to improve their retention, policies, and provide invaluable insights and perspectives.
